NEWS RELEASES

May 30, 2019 - “A Flying Adventure Takes Off in Springfield”

PROJECT STATEMENT

The Flying Adventures of Two Candy Cane Pen Friends is the enchanted tale — told through photographs and hand-lettered text — of pen pals who finally meet and spend time exploring the Pacific Northwest in a little blue and yellow airplane.  Written in the spirit of The Little Prince, Flying Adventures is a timeless story that celebrates the magic of friendship and flight, inspiring the dreamer in us all.  (On a personal note, it also happens to be the creative retelling of the adventure which made the artist want to learn how to fly.) Originally intended as a single thank-you gift for her aviator penpal, the project has since evolved and expanded. Wanting to bring the story and its inspiration to many different audiences, Retter presents Flying Adventures not only as an editioned handmade artist book, but also as an illustrated reading, abridged paperbound zine, and now, a framed exhibition scheduled at the Springfield Museum of Art for the summer and early fall of 2019. Titled “A Flying Adventure: Works by Claudia Retter,” the exhibit includes the original book, the gallery edition of 42 framed folios, maps, memorabilia, and the original storyboard from the artist’s personal collection.
